Because Aurora was one of the first communities in the United States to have an all-electric street lighting system, it became known as the "City of Lights" in 1908. It was originally comprised of two villages: East Aurora, which was incorporated in 1845 on the east bank of the river, and West Aurora, which was formally established on the west bank in 1854. In 1857, the two communities merged to form the city of Aurora.

Aurora covers approximately 46 square miles total, with 45 square miles of land, and 1 square mile of water, and after Chicago, it is Illinois' second-largest city and the 144th-largest city in the U.S. It is located on the outskirts of the Illinois Technology and Research Corridor and like much of the Chicago metropolitan area, has a long history of manufacturing. Both the Hollywood Casino and the massive live performance theater known as the Paramount, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, can be found in the heart of Downtown Aurora.
